The intended result of the murder plot was complicated: Lord Darnley, thinking that the stress of witnessing the murder might force Mary to miscarry her pregnancy, hoped to be named regent or even king in her place while she recovered. Even if she survived the ordeal unscathed, his co-conspirators promised to imprison Mary and set him up in her place. Unbeknownst to Darnley, his co-conspirators were as eager to be rid of him as they were to be rid of David Rizzio, and they intended to persuade the queen that the entire plot had been Darnley’s idea, hoping that she would then have Darnley executed for treason. Mary and Darnley were imprisoned together for two days after the murder, but Mary, who was less intellectual than Elizabeth but far more intelligent than her husband, managed to extract the full details of the plot from him. At her instigation, they escaped together and raised an army to march on the rebellious lords, who fled the city to avoid her. Mary lost all trust in Darnley afterwards, and would keep him at a distance from her councils for the rest of what remained of his life.
